Supporting Hospitals without Obstetrics

Obstetric Consulting Solutions

Obstetric Consulting Solutions was founded in 2025 in a growing response to the urgent need of rural hospitals with and without inpatient obstetrical services.

100 labor and delivery units have closed services since 2020. Unfortunately, there are more to come, not less.

What can we do to support communities and hospitals that have lost inpatient obstetrical services:

  • Support keeping prenatal and postnatal care in the community even if inpatient obstetrical services close—travel is a barrier for care.  Maternal deaths from MVAs in rural states are common.
  • Support the emergency departments that care for pregnant patients without inpatient obstetrical services with:
    • Regular and consistent staff certifications (BLSO, NRP, Comprehensive Advanced Life Support (CALS) OB/Newborn course, or similar
    • On-site Simulation team training
    • Transfer pathways to inpatient facilities with higher levels of maternal care
    • Clinical pathways for emergency departments that assure the rapid triage, assessment, stabilization and transfer of pregnant patients.
    • Stocking basic and appropriate emergency obstetrical equipment and medications
    • Maintaining the WHO Basic emergency obstetric care services including: blood products, intravenous antibiotics, uterotonics, anticonvulsant medications and neonatal resuscitation.
  • Support comprehensive EMS support
    • Stabilize our EMS systems
    • Prioritize pregnant patients for immediate transfer to higher levels of maternal care

Together, we can make a difference.

Every mother matters.  Every mother deserves safe care.

We have done extensive work in rural health care delivery, especially focused on obstetrical care delivery for both birthing and non-birthing facilities. We are here to help.
